Middle Earth Film Saga Wikia

Bain was the son of Bard I, brother of Sigrid and Tilda, father of Brand and paternal grandfather of Bard II.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Bain was born around TA 2928 to Bard. His elder sister Sigrid was born three years before him and a sister named Tilda in TA 2930. Bain's mother mysteriously dies and takes up work to support his surviving family members.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug[]

During the year TA 2941, Bain's family was being spied on by the Master of Lake-town's guards and his family had to stay very low. Bain and his siblings saw they were being under surveillance and went to find Bard, only to find his father was smuggling thirteen dwarves and a hobbit. The company later went under the pipelines, leading them into their house. Bain went down stairs, helping the first few dwarves into their house via the toilet.

After Bard realized who Thorin was, he tasked Bain to make sure they wouldn't leave. However, Bain failed to stop them. The next day, a dying Kíli with his remaining company members, Bofur, Óin, and Fíli came to Bard's door, asking for help. Meanwhile the dwarves' remaining companions had went down to face Smaug, only for them to wake the dragon up. Before his children lost all hope, Bard showed them the Black Arrow passed by from his father to him.

Bain left with his father asking why he never revealed that he had the black Arrow the entire time, which Bard answers he did not think it was important at the moment. Before they put their plan in action, Bard sends Bain away with the black arrow, which he hides in a boat underneath a blanket before returning home.

Destruction of Lake-town[]

Smaug reaches Lake-town and begins mercilessly burning and destroying the town and its people. Bard is able to free himself by using a rope made of cloth and using it to latch onto the nearest moving object (in this case, the Master of Lake-town's neck), and break open the door. Running on the rooftops to the highest tower, Bard uses all of his arrows unsuccessfully shooting at Smaug, but, right after Bard runs out of arrows, Bain appears with the Black Arrow and hands it to his father. Using the pieces of the destroyed tower to build a make-shift crossbow, Bard puts the shaft on Bain's shoulder as a base for the arrow. Bain bravely stands straight so Bard can correctly tilt the arrow toward Smaug, who touches onto the ground in front of the tower and mocks the father and son. As Smaug charges forward, Bard launched the arrow into the weak spot on the dragon's chest, nearly taking out Bain's ear, but causing Smaug to tumble out of control past Bard and Bain and into several burning houses. Smaug, terrified, lifts into the air, but dies and falls back to earth, crushing Lake-town.

The Battle of the Five Armies[]

Bard and Bain survived, however, and Bain proves his worth helping Lake-Town survivors and later participating valiantly in the Siege of Dale.

Personality and traits[]

Bain

Bain, son of Bard and second official king of Dale.

Bain was dedicated towards his family, remaining undyingly loyal to his father  choosing to risk his life to aid Bard by giving him the Black Arrow to face Smaug over escaping the town,  and protecting his sisters from orcs or during the Battle of the Five Armies. Because Bain and his family were being spied on by the Master of Lake-town's men, Bain learned to keep a low profile to not raise any suspicions on their enemies' parts.

He obeys his father's orders, even when he did not agree with them; as he hesitated to run when Bard told him to hide the Black Arrow and resturn home, but eventually conceded.

Like his siblings, Bain was welcoming towards the dwarves, and helping an injured Kili recover in their home. Long after the battle, Bain ruled Dale with wisdom and keeping his father's legacy alive, maintaining peace with both Erebor and Mirkwood.
