- " Farewell, Master Burglar...Go back to your books... and your armchair. Plant your trees, watch them grow. If more people... valued home... above gold... this world would be a merrier place."
- —Thorin to Bilbo
Bilbo Baggins is the titular main protagonist of The Hobbitfilm trilogy. While a Baggins of Bag End, Bilbo still is his mother's son. Bilbo soon becomes one of the best friends of Thorin Oakenshield and the rest of their company. Soon, Bilbo comes across a ring that Gollum lost, and will change a lot in Bilbo's life.
Bilbo was the only Hobbit member in Thorin's Company and the Baggins family.
Character overview
Bilbo Baggins of the Shire is the son of Belladonna Took and Bungo Baggins, grandson of Old Took, Mungo and Laura Baggins and cousin of Frodo Baggins, Peregrin "Pippin" Took and Meriadoc "Merry" Brandybuck. Born to Belladonna Took and Bungo Baggins, Bilbo was born September 22, fifty years before the Quest of Erebor and later inherited Bag End from his parents after their deaths.
Around April 24, TA 2941, Bilbo was later visited by thirteen dwarves and a wizard and later became the fourteenth member of the company of dwarves. He faced trolls, orcs and Wargs during their travels. Bilbo ultimately escaped from Goblin town and came in possession of the One Ring, succeeding Gollum as the Ring-bearer. When they were cornered by Azog the Defiler, a terrifying white Orc, he saved the life of Thorin Oakenshield, the King under the Mountain in exile and the leader of their company. In late summer, early autumn, Bilbo and his friends stayed in Beorn's house before making their way to Mirkwood. He and his friends were found and captured by the spiders that dwelled there. After they escaped them, Bilbo's friends were captured by Elves and with the use of his ring, Bilbo managed to get his companions out of the Elven king's dungeons. Bilbo later reawakened Smaug from his slumber, leading to the conflict in Erebor and they accidentally set the dragon lose upon Lake-town.
After Smaug was killed, Bilbo had to struggle with Thorin falling into dragon sickness. He later tried to settle the conflict of the Battle of the Five Armies from happening by trading off the Arkenstone he had found and gave it to his friend's enemies, Bard and Thranduil. His intentions were objected, and Bilbo was later thrown out of the Lonely Mountain by Thorin. During the Battle of the Five Armies, Bilbo fought bravely but had to warn Thorin of the army coming from the North, but he was too late. Bilbo stayed goodbye to a dying Thorin Oakenshield before returning to the Shire to live a peaceful life again, but Bilbo was not the same.
He later adopted his cousin and nephew, Frodo Baggins. Around the time Bilbo grew older, he had by then decided to stay with Elrond in Rivendell for the time being and gave his younger cousin the One Ring. He later assisted Frodo by giving him the mithril shirt Thorin gave him and then Sting. When Bilbo had lived up all his years on Middle-earth, being the bearer of the One Ring, bilbo later departed over the seas.
Background
Bilbo was born in the late Third Age to Belladonna Took, daughter of Gerontius "The Old" Took, and Bungo Baggins, son of Mungo Baggins and Laura Grubb. Bilbo was both reckless and adventurous as a child. Growing older, Bilbo attended many of his grandfather's party. At one of them when he was three years old, Bilbo met the wizard Gandalf, who was a family friend of Bilbo's mother and grandfather. The young Bilbo began to play with Gandalf by "attacking him with his toy sword. However, Belladonna frantically stopped her son from using his toy sword against her old friend. Instead of being furious, Gandalf just affectionately pet Bilbo's curls.
As he was reaching adulthood, Bilbo enjoyed listening to Gandalf's stories, watching his fireworks on Midsummer's eve. He heard stories of Stone-giants, princes rescuing princesses that Bilbo just took as fairytales. He would often search the woods for elves and wanted a life outside of the Shire, inspired by Gandalf's many tales [1]
At an unknown point, Bilbo learned how to throw rocks, so much, that birds fled the area when he threw one.
When he was twenty-five-years-old, Bilbo suffered through the Fell Winter and developed a fear of wolves.
At the age of thirty-three, Bilbo came of age, officially an adult to Hobbit culture. However, his grandfather had passed before he could see his grandson grow older. Around the age of thirty-six, Bilbo's father passed, leaving only Bilbo and his mother. Living with his mother for eight years, Belladonna passed when her son was forty-one. With a happy childhood, Bilbo was saddened towards his parents' deaths and learned to have responsibility as the head of the Baggins family. However, he had to remain wary of the Sackville-Bagginses, who wanted Bag End for themselves.
Bilbo lived the comfortable life, never doing anything unrespectable and was always on time and that nothing unexpected ever happen.
Unknown to Bilbo, he became part of the plot to destroy the dragon Smaug and reclaim Erebor. Gandalf planned with Thorin to have Bilbo become part of the company as the fourteenth member. Thorin begrudgingly allowed Gandalf to choose Bilbo as their burglar.

Meeting Gandalf again
- "To think I'd be 'good morning'd By Belladonna Took's son, if I were selling buttons at the Door"
- —Gandalf to Bilbo[src]
Many years later, Bilbo later sits on his bench and smokes. It transits to sixty years earlier, in which young Bilbo is smoking when Gandalf appears. At first, the HOBBIT has no idea who this mysterious man is until he identifies who he is. Bilbo didn't seem to recognize him, as most hobbits forgot what Gandalf even looked like. Gandalf asked Bilbo if he would go on an adventure. Bilbo kept on protesting and when he realized who Gandalf was, the Hobbit remembered him when he was a child, and had "had no idea [he] was still in business. Bilbo declined and closed the door behind him. He heard something scratch against his door and took a peek to see Gandalf's eye staring right at him, and Bilbo turned away.
Later on, that night, Bilbo’s dinner is interrupted with the arrival of the First dwarves Dwalin, Fili, Kíli and Balin. Bilbo finds Dwalin revolting when he hogs food, Balin odd when he comes, and tries to get rid of Fili and Kíli. Unfortunately, Bilbo gave the slip nothing was canceled, as he did not know dwarves were coming. When he starts to wonder who is behind inviting all the dwarves, the last group of dwarves rung, and Bilbo learned the mastermind behind it; Gandalf. He attempted to keep all of his possessions from being destroyed, but unable to make the dwarves behave. The final straw is when they "blunt" his knives, forks and dishes. The song is interrupted by a loud knock on the door, significantly alarming the dwarves Thorin Oakenshield was there at last.
Quest of Erebor
Becoming a fourteenth member
Gandalf then presented Bilbo and Thorin, the king asks Bilbo of his fighting skills, which Thorin remarks Bilbo "more like a grocer than a burglar." After dinner, they need Bilbo to sneak past Smaug to reclaim a missing item. Bilbo fainted after Bofur made him uncomfortable of being incinerated by Smaug. Bilbo rejects being the burglar they ask for and tells Gandalf he has the wrong Hobbit. Bilbo fell asleep hearing Thorin's voice. He wakes up to find them gone and signs the contract. Bilbo eventually caught up with them and all the dwarves rejoiced to Bilbo coming, but Thorin resented Bilbo for some reason.
Later on, one night, Bilbo goes to feed his horse, but the is scared by Fili and Kíli's stories about the Orcs coming out in the middle of the night. This infuriated Thorin, who berated them. Bilbo was later told the story of how Thorin defeated Azog the Defiler in battle, and Bilbo asks what happened to the Pale Orc, but Thorin snaps that the filth died of his wounds long ago.
Roast Mutton
One day they settle in a ruined house while Gandalf abandons them. While giving Fíli and Kíli their suppers, the three of them had suffered to find the ponies missing. The brothers send out Bilbo to retrieve their ponies. He tries to stall the troll from eating the captured dwarves, telling them to skin them, or to eat them raw, which makes his companions really angry. With the other dwarves protesting on "having worms", Thorin realized what the hobbit was doing, later changing the Dwarves on how they have parasites. Gandalf arrives just in time while the Stone-trolls turn to stone when the sun hits them on their skin. Bilbo later received Sting from Gandalf the Grey in the trolls' hoard. They hear a howl from the distance and start to flee while Radagast throws them off. Left in defense, Bilbo and his companions go through a secret passageway.
A Short Rest
The passageway leads to the city of Rivendell, the Last Homely House. While Bilbo sees it as haven, the dwarves see it as a threat (most notably Thorin). But they need questions needed to be answered. He wonders about his unnamed sword, which according to Balin is more of a letter opener than an actual sword. Also, Bilbo was in the secret meeting with present Thorin, Balin, Gandalf, and Lord Elrond to read the map. Later on, the next day, Bilbo explored Rivendell, and looked upon it as its glory and artistic ways. Also, he stumbles upon the shards of Narsil. Elrond himself invites Bilbo to stay in Rivendell if he wishes. Later that night, Bilbo had walked up to the steps and overhearing the conversation between Gandalf and Elrond. They talk of the sickness that dwelt on Thorin's family. And Thorin was also listening to the conversation with him in the background. Gandalf uses the White Council to distract them as Bilbo and the dwarves leave. The Hobbit hesitates for a Second before Thorin urges Mr. Baggins to continue on as they step into the wild.
Misty Mountains
Bilbo almost falls before Dwalin and Bofur catch the hobbit before he falls off the cliff. After the Stone giant fight rages, Bilbo stumbles and hangs off the cliff. They adventured into the Misty Mountains. He almost fell off the mountain cliff. Thorin goes down to rescue the hobbit before he falls. Despite saving Bilbo's life, Thorin scolds at Bilbo. Hurt by Thorin's words, Bilbo was about to abandoned them and go back home until Bofur stops him and tries to convince Bilbo to stay. Eventually, Bofur lets Bilbo go before the sword glows blue, which Thorin wakes up the rest of the Company.
After being split from the rest of the group while the company was captured by the goblins of the Misty Mountains, Bilbo was planning to follow and rescue them until a goblin attacks Bilbo. Both fall down with a mushroom breaking Bilbo's fall. While he watches Gollum struggling with the fallen Goblin, Bilbo found the One Ring in Gollum’s cave.
To outsmart Gollum, he riddled with the former hobbit until he figured what was in Bilbo's pocket. While running, Bilbo tripped and fell while the ring slipped onto his finger and he became invisible to Gollum and to those around him. He fallowed the creature all the way the beginning, wondering to kill or leave Gollum alone. Though, Bilbo saw his face and gave him mercy to reunite with the others.
Bilbo runs away from the Goblins where he overhears Thorin saying that Bilbo left back home says, we will not be seeing our Hobbit again. He is long gone. The dwarf is mistaken when Bilbo comes out of nowhere with the ring off. Most of them wonder where he was at, but Gandalf says why does it matter. Thorin demands to know himself. Bilbo says that he knows Thorin always doubted him. Bilbo says he came back to help the dwarves reclaim their home as he feels bad for them. This silences them. Even though Bilbo reunited with his friends, they started running for the edge of the cliff where they are encountered by Azog the Defiler, Thorin's archenemy. The trees fall from the Wargs and the Orcs' meddling. The Orc is about to send one of the Orcs to kill Thorin until Bilbo gets a hold of his footing and attacks the Orc with Sting. He falls unconscious and Bilbo guards until the eagles arrive to save them.

Bilbo sees there is hope after all and that the worst is behind them.
The Eagles flew off with the remaining of the company off to safety, far away from Azog and his followers. The Eagles refuses to go no further to Lake-town in fear they will be shot down. Thorin still was unconscious, and Bilbo was concerned. All of the Company members create a circle. Gandalf was able to revive Thorin up, alive and well, to Bilbo's relief. Thorin scolds at Bilbo for endangering himself to being killed. Surprisingly, Thorin's berating turns into gratefulness and literally embraces Bilbo, clearly hinted that he has earned Thorin's acceptance. He states that he is not a warrior, hero, nor burglar. The company looks forward to the Lonely Mountain and a thrush flying overhead. Bilbo believes the worse is behind them.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
Queer Lodgings
Bilbo was sent by Thorin to overlook the Wargs that were picking up their trail in the break of dawn. Azog, the leader of the Orcs, nearly sees Bilbo, but he ducked down in time before Azog saw him and the Warg runs away. After the pass by Bilbo spots that he is not the only one watching Azog: a huge large black bear. Before the bear sees him, Bilbo runs off and warns the others. By the time he returns, they already ask of what has become of the Wargs fallowing them. Bilbo has both bad news. One: the Wargs are picking up their scent. Two": It is the other problem: a huge black bear is also there. Gandalf secretly knows who it is and says that he will either help them or he will kill them.
The company runs and later is in Beorn's house before the Orcs or Beorn (in bear form) can get to them. While everyone was asleep, Bilbo pulled out the ring and watched at it in wonder. He woke up and found that everyone was already having breakfast. He came off to the rest of his companions. During the time, he learnt of Beorn 's enslavement before escaping it. He supplied them with ponies and weapons they were stripped of.
Mirkwood
At Mirkwood, Bilbo had decided to tell Gandalf of the Ring, but changed his mind and said he found his courage. Gandalf says that it is good, but he'll need it. For days they come across a river, where Bilbo crosses over through the roots of the trees off the broken bridge. After he gets to the other side, he tells the others not to cross. But it is too late as the dwarves follow Bilbo. After crossing, Bilbo and Thorin see a White stag crossing the path. While Bilbo watches the beauty of the deer, Thorin fires at the poor creature before it flees. Bilbo says its bad luck to do that, but Thorin says there's no such thing as luck. Then, Bombur falls in the river and they carry him for days. They later stride in the forest longer. The trees and the poison in them start to get to Bilbo and his dwarf companions, where he sees two of him.
After they lose the pathway, Bilbo sits out while the others try to find the pathway. He strums his fingers against the spider webs. Then Bilbo breaks free of the madness after they lose the sight of the sun. That leads Bilbo to go up to the tree and breaks free of the madness. He spots the lonely mountain. Before he can tell them, the dwarfs mysteriously disappear. He then starts to look for them but is impossible to find them. It isn't until Bilbo falls into a nest of spiders of Mirkwood and is trapped into the web.
Flies and Spiders

After he awakes, Bilbo frees himself. After being free, he throws a couple of rocks to the side for the spiders distracted. One of them knows Bilbo is there. He takes off his ring and kills the spider. As it dies, the spider yells, "it stings". Therefore, Bilbo named his unnamed sword, Sting. He continued to free his companions. Before he ever got the chance, he is knocked down by another spider. Bilbo kills it. After he dropped the other ring, he sees a crab-like one. After brutally killing it, Bilbo is disgusted for what he did. And, he also heard the dwarves crying. Bilbo slipped the ring back on and followed them invisible
The dwarves are captured by the elves. He fallows them to Thranduil's castle. Each dwarf locked up. While exploring the halls for a way to free Thorin and Company, he thought he was caught by Thranduil, but it turns out to be a red-headed elf. Bilbo continues to find a way out. He manages to steals he keys after the Guards all pass out from drinking too much the night before. He appears out of the shadows with keys to help the dwarves escape, much to his companions' delight. Bilbo takes the keys and about to unlock the cell holding Thorin. All of them call out Bilbo, but he silences them all. After freeing, the First is Thorin freed, followed by Balin, and then the others. Before they escape the dwarves' ways, Bilbo points to their other escape plan: the barrels. Most of the dwarves think this is a ridiculous escape plan. Thorin supports Bilbo's idea to escape. Unfortunately, the elves find out that the dwarves have escaped and start run and stop them. Bilbo hears Tauriel and the other elves coming near.
With no barrel, Bilbo falls and almost drowns in the water. Thankfully, the dwarves did not leave, held up by Thorin. He clings onto a cliff. At the gates, Bilbo used Sting to kill an Orc about to kill Nori. They manage to escape via the gates, with Kíli wounded in the process. The prisoners of the Elves escape, and they are no longer there. In the aftermath of the escape, the Company dries off. They are stuck and don't know what to do next. Bilbo suggests they walk around the lake to get to the Lonely Mountain, but to no luck, Balin and Dwalin disagree. They bribed Bard to riding on his barge. Bilbo at some time asked Bard's name and he gave his possibly. Bilbo hides in the barrels. Being the closest, he is the dwarves' lookout, but they believe he's selling them out. They are smuggled into Lake-town, unknowingly by the Lake-town guards.
A Warm Welcome

Bilbo defends Thorin again but this time for his character
- "Me. I'll vouch for him. Now, I have travelled far with these dwarves through great danger, and if Thorin Oakenshield gives his word, then he will keep it."
- —Bilbo to the people of Lake-town[src]
During Bard's house, he sees Thorin looking as if he's seen a ghost. Balin confirms it was in the past. Bilbo's expression changes into seriousness as Balin tells the story to Bilbo of arrow after arrow that Girion, Lord of Dale could not kill it. Bilbo is also fascinated by Bain saying that it opens a patch of Smaug's scales. Although, Dwalin dismisses it as a legend and that it was nothing but a fairytale. After Bard tells them that they cannot leave, Thorin leads them in anyways. Bilbo is one of the First to sneak into the armory before they are caught. Alfrid has his doubts on Thorin, and freely says it, which affects Bilbo to come in Thorin's defense. Thankfully, the Master bids them welcome to the town.
Journey Continued
Bilbo walked through the lifeless fields and realized how quiet it was. Balin says it wasn't always like this as the fields before were filled with life, trees and birds singing during the day, but there were no more. Then, Bilbo sees a thrush fly by before Thorin tells him to relax before realizing where they were. While looking at Dale, the Hobbit realizes that Gandalf is not there. He tries to stop Thorin saying that Gandalf should have met them at the overlook. Apparently Thorin doesn't want to worry about Gandalf and says that they're on their own now. Bilbo moves on. During the trip, Bilbo finds the passage up the secret door. After multiple tries, Thorin and the dwarves give up. Bilbo is optimistic about it and knows that the door will show. He tries to solve the riddle of the "last light of Durin". He later figures out that it is actually the moon's rays that shows the keys. As Bilbo is about to find the key and open it himself, he accidentally kicks it off the ledge. Before the key falls, Bilbo sees a boot step on it.
The foot is revealed to be Thorin's. Hearing Bilbo's calls, the dwarves return and Thorin opens the door.
Conflict with Smaug
Main article: Battle in Erebor
After Thorin opens the door, Bilbo ventures alone. First accompanied by Balin, he is given all the luck by the older dwarf. He is also warned to only touch the gold and not awake Smaug. Bilbo searches the entire room for it but cannot find the Arkenstone. As he touches the next gold, Smaug's eye is revealed and he quickly hides as the eyes open. The dragon peers around for an invisible Bilbo Baggins because of the Ring. After hearing Smaug's cries of "precious" Bilbo takes off the ring, found by Smaug. After spotting the Arkenstone, he tries to stall Smaug, but the dragon is onto him. He knows that Bilbo's dwarf friends are waiting outside. Bilbo tries to lie before the Arkenstone and him start flying.
Smaug is hunting for Bilbo but can never find him. He tries to lower Bilbo out of his hiding spot that Thorin is just using Bilbo. He doesn't believe a word that Smaug says. Bilbo finally comes out of his hiding spot before Smaug finds him. He tries to reach the Arkenstone, but both him and the stone start flying around. He looks over the dragon and sees Smaug's patch missing. Bilbo whispers to himself that the Arrow had found its mark. He spots the missing mark of Smaug's scale, proving Bain's theory true. Smaug overhears him, but Bilbo tries to cover it up. The dragon also tempted to let Bilbo take the Arkenstone and watch it corrupt Thorin's heart and soul. Smaug then tries to destroy Bilbo, but he escapes with the ring. While invisible, Bilbo takes the Arkenstone before fleeing for his life. (Desolation of Smaug, Battle of the Five Armies).
Meanwhile, Thorin rushed in to save Bilbo. Though he is relieved Bilbo is alive, Thorin wants to know where the Arkenstone is, unaware it is in Bilbo's coat. Thorin holds his friend at sword point, until Smaug broke the concentration of the stone and onto Smaug. Bilbo does start to go behind Thorin, before the dwarves come in and rescue Bilbo and Thorin. Noticing that their swords and other weapons are useless against Smaug, they each run away from Smaug before something bad happens more. The Company had in fact avoided Smaug but had not given him the slip. Thorin instead led them to the guardroom in a hope of an escape. As Bilbo makes way through the bridge, a coin falls in front of him and the others stop in their tracks. It fell from Smaug, and Thorin leads them on. They stop in their tracks when they find dwarf corpses Smaug burned earlier. The dwarf king then decides they will lure Smaug to the forges to kill the dragon off. Thorin's remaining company splits into four groups. Thorin takes Bilbo and Balin as the first, Dori Ori and Bombur of the second group, Dwalin and Nori, Bifur and Glóin. Before Smaug attacks Bilbo and his companions, Dori's group draws him off as they make their escape.
Bilbo, Thorin, and Balin had evaded Smaug once more and successfully make it to Erebor's forges. Balin found the other passage and Bilbo had to shout that it was the other way. Apparently, the distracting didn't last long and Smaug attacks Bilbo, Thorin and Balin. had actually found it and points them in the right direction. Bilbo calls Thorin, who is ahead, the entrance was found. It was unfortunate to say Smaug was not distracted long enough as they thought. Thorin orders Bilbo and Balin to abandon him to Smaug's fire, which Bilbo reluctantly does. They later meet in the forges all at once, and Thorin's plan is put into action. He orders them to take cover as Smaug fires at them, but unwittingly set the forges at fire. Bilbo becomes Part of Thorin's plan when he orders the hobbit to pull the lever that unleashes water and puts out Smaug's fire. Bilbo watches from the pillar before it collapses, and he falls off a pillar. After Thorin yells at Bilbo to run, the hobbit makes a run for the exit. Smaug comes and attacks Bilbo but Thorin stops him by distracting Smaug and making him fall in molten gold. It doesn't work and Bilbo watches in horror of what they unleashed).
Smaug's Fury and death
In horror, Bilbo watches the destruction of Lake-town with his friends. The hobbit peers down and sees that Thorin does not care what is happening. He looks conflicted at both the city and Thorin. He and Ori hear a very big splash. Bilbo announces that Smaug is dead and the company rejoices as the ravens are returning to the Mountain.
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
The Gold sickness strikes again
Bilbo starts to worry about Thorin's well-being dwarves also watch in horror as their leader begins to fall into the gold sickness. After attempts of trying to talk to Thorin, Bilbo starts to see the person he once knew starting to fade. Rejoined the four dwarves Fíli, Kíli, Óin, and Bofur, he hurried over to the dwarves entering Erebor, telling them to leave. Bilbo says Thorin would hardly eat and hardly slept for days searching for the Arkenstone. Fíli on the other hand worries for what has happened. Bilbo attempts to stop him by calling out his friend's name, but it's useless.
The group fallows Fíli to see Thorin hunting for the Arkenstone in the gold. Bilbo watches in horror Thorin refuses to let anyone rest until the Arkenstone is found. Unknown to him, Bilbo has it in his possession Bilbo takes out the stone after remembering the time when he stole it while invisible. Thorin comes to ranting when Dwalin and Balin report that the Arkenstone has not been found with Bilbo being quiet in the background. He threatens to kill the person who would withhold it from him and not give it to him.
Afterwards, Bilbo finds Balin upset in the library. Bilbo is conflicted whether to give up the stone to Thorin, or not tell him at all. Balin says he's watched Thorin and his grandfather both succumb to the dragon sickness and doesn't want to live through it again. Bilbo asks if it is wise to Give the Arkenstone away, and make Thorin better, but Balin says that it will only make Thorin worse, which terrifies Bilbo very much and makes up his mind not to give it away.

Bilbo's acorn
Alone again, Bilbo goes to a secluded hall in the mountain. He takes something out of his pockets. The hobbit is scared when a suspicious, angered Thorin demands to know what's in Bilbo's hands, assuming he has the Arkenstone in his hands. Bilbo says it's nothing, but Thorin still shouts at the hobbit for withholding whatever is in his hands. Nothing shows up, but a small acorn Bilbo found at Beorn's garden. Thorin is asking how he kept it safe all this time. Bilbo explains his plans to plant it in the Shire for the good and the bad things that happened and the things they faced and to know that he made it all the way home. Thorin smiles at Bilbo's thoughts and sees the innocence in his heart. There is a brief cheerful moment where Thorin snaps back into his old self until Dwalin announces the Lake-town people have taken refuge in Dale.
Prelude to war

Thorin refuses Bard's offer for no bloodshed to tear. Bilbo says he cannot go to war, but Thorin tells him that the situation does not concern him. Bilbo says they are outnumbered, but the king has sent a raven to his cousin for back-up. Thorin tells him they are not for much longer and tells Bilbo to never underestimate dwarves.
Mithril
The dwarves take armor off of the wall and prepare for battle. Thorin later requests Bilbo's presence. There the dwarf, Thorin Oakenshield gave Bilbo Baggins a coat of mithril. Bilbo thought he looked ridiculous, but it was only because Thorin was already pleased with Bilbo by then. Thorin tells bilbo that he thinks one of the dwarves has the Arkenstone. Bilbo tells him would he really fight for the gold over honor. Then, he starts to realize Thorin has become madder by the moment when he literally talking like Smaug.
Betrayal, but not a Betrayal
Tired of Thorin's madness, and scared for his friends' well-being, Bilbo sneaks out of the Lonely Mountain, unnoticed by the dwarves. He successfully makes it to Dale, where Bard's and Thranduil's army reside in, and has a brief, happy reunion with Gandalf.
Bilbo is brought before Thranduil, who upon First meeting Bilbo knows that this was the "halfling who stole [the] keys from [underneath the noses of Thranduil's] guards". Bilbo apologizes awkwardly before showing the Arkenstone, and claims he took it as his one-fourteenth share of the treasure. Bard asks why he does this, and Bilbo gives his answer: to do it for the sake of his friends. Gandalf tells Bilbo to rest up for the night, and leave early in the morning, but Bilbo refuses to leave as he is the fourteenth member of the Company, but Gandalf says there is no more Companions of Thorin Oakenshield, and that their time is over. The wizard tells Bilbo the evil of gold and that it almost corrupts anyone, almost anyone anyway.
Worried that the hobbit will run out of the city, Gandalf charges one of the men to guard Bilbo and that if the hobbit attempts to leave, Alfrid is to warn him immediately. Sometime in the night, Bilbo runs back to the Mountain before he is missed. The next morning Bilbo confesses his action that he had given the Men and the Elves the Arkenstone. Thorin feels that Bilbo betrayed his trust and that he had it in his possession all along. The hobbit defiantly answers why he didn't give Thorin the Arkenstone: it was because the stone changed the Dwarf that Bilbo hadn't met at Bag End.
In his rage, Thorin orders the other dwarves to throw Bilbo off of the gate. The dwarves refuse to throw their friend down. Thorin attacks and seizes Bilbo and intends on killing him until Gandalf intervenes and for the dwarf to release his burglar. Bilbo, with assistance from Bofur and Fíli comfort the hobbit and help him escape.
The Battle of Five Armies
Sooner, Bilbo joins the Battle of the Five Armies with Gandalf, Thranduil, Bard and the dwarves. Bilbo would count as part of the Dwarves army, and the Men of Lake-town and the Elves of Mirkwood. Meanwhile in the Mountain, Thorin overcame his dragon sickness after hearing voices inside his head. Bilbo's voice being amongst them: "Is this treasure worth more than you honor?" and "You are changed, Thorin."
Outside, he sits out for a time and then hears a horn. Bilbo full of hope realizes that Thorin had overcome is dragon sickness. He then sees Thorin, Dwalin, Fíli, and Kíli reaching for Ravenhill. Then, Tauriel and Legolas come and warn Gandalf of the upcoming Armies of Orcs that are coming in from the north. To Bilbo's fear, Thorin, Fíli and Kíli and Dwalin are up there and heading into a trap.

Bilbo disobeys Gandalf to warn Thorin of the upcoming battle reinforcements Azog sent for.
The Right thing
- "Don't be ridiculous, you'll never make it.
"Why not?
"Because they will see you coming and kill you!
"No, they won't. They won't see me.
"It's out of the question. I won't allow it.
"I'm not asking you to allow it, Gandalf. " - —Gandalf and Bilbo arguing[src]
Bilbo feels to warn Thorin the orcs coming to Ravenhill. Gandalf, worried for his friend's safety, forbids Bilbo to do so because he will be killed if the Orcs see him. Bilbo says they won't see him, but Gandalf still forbids it. Bilbo says he wasn't asking for his permission and runs off to warn Thorin of the Orcs coming.
Ravenhill
Bilbo manages to escape the Battle and Make it to Ravenhill. Thorin briefly has a happy reunion with Bilbo before the former tells them of their situation; an Orc army coming from the North plan to surround Ravenhill. Thorin realizes it's a trap and motions for Bilbo to fallow him. It isn't until Bilbo and his friends see Fíli captured by the Orcs and Azog kills Fíli right in front of his kinsmen and Bilbo. The hobbit is heartbroken by Fili's sudden death and his sword starts to glow blue. Just as Goblin mercenaries are about to harm Bilbo, Dwalin rushes in to protect the Hobbit and Bilbo aids the dwarf by throwing rocks at the Enemy until he is knocked out.
Thorin's death
- "Bilbo! I'm glad you're here. I wish to part from you in friendship."
"No, you... you are not going anywhere, Thorin. You're going to live." "I would take back my words and my deeds at the gate. You did what only a true friend would do. Forgive me. I was too blind to see it. I am so sorry... that I led you into such peril."
"No, I'm- I'm glad to have shared in your perils, Thorin. Each and every one of them. It is far more than any Baggins deserves."
"Farewell... master burglar. Go back to your books... and your armchair. Plant your trees, watch them grow. If more people... valued home... above gold... this world would be a merrier place. " - —Thorin and Bilbo[src]
Bilbo regains consciousness and sees the Eagles fighting over him and regains his strength again. He gets up and sees Thorin fall to the ground. He rushes to the fallen king's side, who knows he's already dying and asks to part with the Hobbit in friendship. Bilbo says Thorin's going to live and attempts to heal Thorin's wounds, but the hobbit sees that his friend is beyond help. Thorin continues, in his last dying breaths of the things he said, the deeds he'd done back at the gate, and leading him into many dangers. Bilbo says he was glad to of shared perils with Thorin. In his last dying breath, Thorin says. Farewell, Master Burglar. Go back to your books, to your armchair. Plant your trees, watch them grow. If more people valued home above gold, this world would be a merrier place. And then, Thorin dies.
A helpless Bilbo breaks down crying and mourns his fallen friend. Gandalf later comes up to Bilbo in a pour attempt to cheer him up, but he is still upset Thorin is dead.
Funeral of the Durin's sons

Bilbo during the the memorial services
- "The King is dead"
"Long live the King!" - —Gandalf and Balin
Shortly after, Bilbo attended the funeral of Thorin and his heirs, Fili and Kíli. Heartbroken, he began crying at Thorin's side. Bilbo, along with the survivors of the company took out Sting and saluted Dain, acknowledging him at the next king. He said goodbye to his old friends. Packed for the journey home, Balin escorts Bilbo out. After the funeral, Bilbo leaves promising that the dwarves are welcomed in the shire any time and to not bother knocking. Gandalf later consults to Bilbo he knew that the Hobbit had the ring the entire time, without Bilbo denying it.
Return home

Later attending his auction, He finds that his deranged cousins, the Sackville-Baggins tried to take all his things but Bilbo manages to buy back all his items back.
It would only be a matter of time before Bilbo would be visited by Balin and Gandalf would visit him to tell him news of Erebor under Dain's rule and Lake-town was rebuilt, as well as Dale. The new Master of Lake-town is kinder than the last one. He was presumably
In Between the Series
Bilbo later adopted Frodo as his heir and for the sixty years, Bilbo kept the Ring. Later, Bilbo had reflected on his adventures and decided to write the Red Book of Westmarch. Frodo later comes and asks what he is working on and Bilbo tells him that it is private, that not even Frodo can read it just yet.
Then they talk about the Sackville-Baggins, whom Bilbo states that the matriarch of the family, Lobelia stuffed his spoons in her pocket. Bilbo says for Frodo to look out for Lobelia when he is gone. He later has his nephew put the note, No Admittance except on Party business. Frodo later goes to wait for Gandalf to come. Bilbo sits out on his doorstep, reflecting back on the adventure he had.
Later, Bilbo held the ring. Then a knock at the door his heard and Bilbo put s it away. He tells the visitor to go away but then stops at the sound of Gandalf's voice and goes out to greet him.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
After many years, the two friends sit out, and Bilbo says this will be a night to remember. During his one hundred and eleventh birthday party, Bilbo uses the ring one last time as a "Practical prank". Apparently, Bilbo lied about losing the ring, still having it. Gandalf claims Bilbo has had the ring for long enough, but Bilbo refuses to hand it over. At First, he breaks into Gollum's state, until Gandalf speaks in a dark voice. Bilbo reaches an agreement: he will give the Ring to Frodo and Bilbo goes to stay with the Elves in Rivendell. Sometime later living in Rivendell, Bilbo has aged even more du to giving the Ring up to Frodo.
Apparently, the ring stopped Bilbo from aging, but his aging accelerated as soon as the Ring fell out of his hand. He is seen embracing a healed Frodo and shows him the Red Book. Frodo recalls his childhood, pretending to be Bilbo on one of his adventures. Frodo says that he is nothing Like Bilbo, who agrees with him. Before Frodo left for the Quest of the Fellowship of the Ring, Bilbo gave Frodo old Sting and his mithril shirt given to him by his late friend, Thorin Oakenshield. He then sees his old ring and wishes to hold it one more time, but Bilbo inadvertently almost attacks Frodo and then breaks down crying with Frodo comforting him.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
After the Ring was destroyed, Bilbo has aged very old. He asks about seeing his old ring. To spare Bilbo of its fate, Frodo says instead that he lost it. Bilbo than says he wished to have hold it one last time. Later, Merry, Pippin, Frodo and Sam help him out of the cart.
Since Bilbo bore the One ring longer than Frodo, he was allowed passage into the Undying Lands. He goes on board with Elrond saying that he'll have one last adventure.
Personality and traits
- "You're a fine person Mister Baggins. "
- —Gandalf to Bilbo[src]
As a child, Bilbo was very adventurous, and determined. He had been interested in Gandalf's stories about the outside world and one day, wished to see it. Most people would say he had more of his mother's Took blood within him instead of his father's Most of the time, he stayed out late after dark, looking for elves in the woods. However, when he was a young man and inherited Bag End after the death of his parents, Bilbo became a highly respectable hobbit throughout the Shire, but still retained his desire for adventure.
In the very beginning of the trilogy, Bilbo didn't want to have any adventures, especially to Gandalf's cause when the wizard first approached him. During their first meeting, Bilbo was very stressed out when the dwarves came piling in and ruining his things. He was very protective of his parents and grandfather's possessions because they are the only things he has left of his parents. His adventurous, took side got the better of him, as Bilbo immediately changed his mind the next morning. The first time, he didn't sign the contract out of fear of never coming back home, but Bilbo couldn't help but answer to the dwarves' plight of no longer having a home, feeling pity on them for not having a home like he did. The hobbit even once told Lord Elrond that most of the company didn't think Bilbo should be on their quest. However, after Bilbo saved Thorin, he began feeling a part of their group. Though being initially annoyed with the dwarves, Bilbo came to see them as his friends and was going to great lengths to save them if he could.
Bilbo had a strained relationship with Thorin when they were getting to know each other and was easily annoyed when the dwarves threw around his dishes. Bilbo even saved them numerous times, first by stalling the trolls all night, saving Thorin from Azog the Defiler, freeing them from the Spiders and the Elves, etc. During the second and third films, Bilbo was determined to help the Dwarves reclaim Erebor because he pitied them when they could not have a home of their own.
Over time, Bilbo became close to the dwarves, especially to Thorin, Balin and Bofur. However, Balin and Bofur were the only ones initially friendly to Bilbo before he saved their king's life. Bofur showed excessive fondness for Bilbo, especially pointing out Bilbo's disappearance to Thorin. Fili and Kíli often played pranks on Bilbo, but they grew rather fond of each other and was very sadden by losing his two friends. Shown to be honest and down to earth, Bilbo was unable to tell a very good lie. For example, Bilbo failed to lie to the Trolls and even the deadly Smaug himself and Gandalf as well. They were all able to see through. Bilbo even points out that he is "burglar but likes to think [he] is an honest one." Bilbo had no knowledge of the outside world and no knowledge of how to use a weapon. However, Bilbo was aware of the tales surrounding the fall of Erebor and knew perfectly what a dragon was. However, when they were out travelling for the first time, Bilbo was mortified of the unknown and was easily scared. (i.e. Fili and Kíli teasing him on how an Orc would kill everyone and when Bofur mentioned Smaug would burn Bilbo to a crisp causing Bilbo to faint.
Despite appearances, Bilbo is actually skilled and can make his way in this world. He is often quick witted, such as stalling the trolls and also saving his friends from the Elves. Bilbo also used his wit against Smaug and could plan how to get out of situations. He was able to be quite clever and often manipulated his enemies, showing he uses manipulation out of survival than out of malice. For example, Bilbo easily manipulated the Trolls into arguing all night up until Gandalf came and turned them to stone. He was later able to manipulate Gollum into playing a game of riddles. However, Bilbo's manipulations could be seen through most people, especially Smaug, probably due to Bilbo's good nature. Bilbo was horrified when he starts killing others, most notably his first victims, the Warg, he stares out in terror. However, Bilbo was brutal when it came to enemies. He showed no remorse in killing the Orc that almost executed Thorin and killed a baby spider over the Ring. (However, to be fair, Bilbo was under the Ring's influence). Bilbo also nearly killed Gollum, but decided against it, feeling pity for the creature.
Unlike the dwarves, who use their weapons to get themselves out of tricky situations, Bilbo used his wits and thoughts to get himself and others out of trouble. For instance, he was able to stall Smaug for a very long time, being able to keep a long conversation with him. Bilbo only uses weapons when necessary when dealing with an unreasonable individual. He was also very resourceful and very inspirational, even among his Dwarven friends. Bilbo had leadership skills among his friends, who willingly followed his lead on several occasions.
Overall, Bilbo was a very brave hobbit and proved to be very friendly and caring towards friends but merciless towards enemies.
Self-confidence
At the beginning of the series, Bilbo was very skeptical of himself being on the journey in the first place, similar to what the other dwarves thought of. However, Gandalf had confidence that his Hobbit friend was more capable than they thought including himself. Bilbo eventually had a self-confidence as the series went on, proving to be quite more resourceful than they he let on. It's especially at the end that Bilbo proves his resourcefulness when he helps save his friends, for example, saving Thorin from beheading from Azog's Executioner, showing his self-confidence accelerated even further. As he returned home, Bilbo's confidence had been better, as he strongly stood up against the Sackville-Bagginses when he returned home
Took vs. Baggins
Throughout all the series, Bilbo found himself struggling between the Baggins half as well as his Took half.
On terms of the Took side of his family, Bilbo inherited most of his mother's adventurous nature. For example, he wished of a life outside of a shire and even as a child, would stay past his curfew to look for elves and also ask Gandalf about the outside world, even on his disappeared uncle. Even in adulthood and letting his father's side get over him, Bilbo still longed for adventure, as the Dwarves' singing about the Lonely Mountain moved him. He stroked an opportunity on adventures when the dwarves came and couldn't help but feel their plight. Eventually, Bilbo made it his goal to get the dwarves their homeland after realizing they had no home to go to like Bilbo did rather than out of adventure.
On the terms of his Baggins side of the family, Bilbo was raised to a gentle-hobbit, just like his father. Growing up, Bilbo grew to love the comfortable life in Bag End but always found he was deep down his mother's son rather than his father's. He was very protective of his family's possessions and found it absurd that Gandalf was looking for someone (i.e. him) for an adventure. However, he always found conflicting between his "Baggins side" over his "Took side."
Physical Appearane

Bilbo equipped properly in The Desolation of Smaug.
Bilbo has curly brown hair, hazel eyes and stands short, about four feet tall.
In the beginning of the Hobbit film series, Bilbo had a plain white shirt, with a yellow waistcoat and grey knee-length pants. He wore a blue jacket when going out.
Throughout two-thirds of An Unexpected Journey and half-way through The Desolation of Smaug, Bilbo had a plain wine-red jacket, white, long-sleeved shirt with an olive-green waistcoat that had acorn buttons and knee-length brown pants. In the second half of Desolation and all the way through the Battle of the Five Armies, Bilbo traded in his red jacket with a blue robe he acquired from Bard.
Special abilities
At first, Bilbo has no experience with a sword whatsoever. The dwarves probably trained Bilbo how to use it better as his sword fighting progresses great in the series. Even without training, Bilbo becomes quite a resilient fighter. One example is that Bilbo goes out and in fact destroys the Orc that almost killed Thorin, besides not having mad sword fighting skills. He easily sleighs the Orc that almost killed Nori and also fights great in the Battle of the Five Armies, considering the fact you only see him fighting once.
Bilbo also has an expert on Burglar skills. Since he is light on his feet, Bilbo can easily sneak into places. For example, he was able to sneak behind the trolls and was nearly succesful in stealing from teh trolls. However, Bilbo was very quiet in sneaking up behind his enemies, especially when it came to stealing from Smaug. He also has accelerated hearing and can hear from miles away. Bilbo also has keen eyes, spotting things at an instant. Thorin even praised Bilbo for having this ability. As he had little nieces and nephews that loved Bilbo, he had great-stories he used to share, even to Frodo, the boy Bilbo was in charge with.

- "I would take back my words and deeds at the gate. You did what only a true friend would do. Forgive me; I was too blind to see. I am so sorry that I have led you into such peril."
- —Thorin to Bilbo while on his deathbed

Close friends, brothers in arms and companions on the quest to reclaim Erebor, Bilbo and Thorin became close during their adventure. Bilbo met Thorin in Bag End for the first time in April 2941 of the Third Age. Bilbo looks uncomfortable as Thorin looks him over, claiming the hobbit would be more of a grocer than a burglar. You could say Thorin and Bilbo's friendship was rocky, but it wasn't called friendship quite yet. There causes more strain when Thorin attempt to rescue Bilbo and was forced to stand down to cause no death to come along the burglar. Thorin underestimates Bilbo, and he would have probably forced him to stay in Rivendell. Thorin later saves Bilbo again in the Misty Mountains but not before yelling a t him even though Bilbo didn't do anything wrong.
Later, Bilbo saves his life from the Orcs right before they were rescued by the eagles. Thorin wakes up and Bilbo is relieved to find Thorin alive and alright, but taken aback when Thorin shouts at him.
Balin
Bilbo is at First confused why Balin and Dwalin are in his house. Bilbo later starts to grow to care about Balin as a friend, and often taught by the Dwarf lord the history of the Dwarves of Durin's House. Balin affectionately calls him "lad" or "laddie" as a sign that Balin is older than Bilbo but also a sign of affection.

Tolkien legendarium [3]
Bilbo is one of the very important historical figures in Middle-earth.
Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit in comfortable middle age at 50 years old, was hired despite his objections as a "burglar" by the wizard Gandalf and 13 Dwarves led by their king Thorin Oakenshield on a quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and its treasure from the dragon Smaug. The adventure took Bilbo and the companions through the wilderness, to the elf haven of Rivendell, across the Misty Mountains and the black forest of Mirkwood, to Lake-town in the middle of Long Lake, and eventually to the Mountain itself. Here, after the dragon was killed and the Mountain reclaimed, the Battle of Five Armies took place.
In his journey, Bilbo encountered other fantastic creatures, including trolls, elves, giant spiders, a man who can change shape into a bear, goblins, eagles, wolves and a slimy, murderous creature named Gollum. Underground, near Gollum's lair, Bilbo accidentally found a magic ring of invisibility, which he used to escape from Gollum.
By the end of the journey, Bilbo had become wiser and more confident, having saved the day in many precarious situations. He rescued the dwarves from giant spiders with the magic ring and a short Elven-sword he acquired. He used the ring to sneak around in dangerous places, as well as his wits to smuggle the dwarves out of the elves' prisons. When tensions arose over ownership of the recovered treasure, he tried unsuccessfully to bring the opposing sides to compromise, using the Arkenstone, a stolen heirloom jewel, as leverage. This strained his relationship with Thorin, but the two were reconciled at Thorin's deathbed. At the end of the story, Bilbo returned to his home in the Shire only to find that several of his relatives, believing him to be dead, were trying to claim his home and possessions. In addition to becoming wealthy from his share of the dwarves' treasure, he found that he, like Adam, had traded respectability for experience and wisdom. At the end, Gandalf proclaims Bilbo is no longer the Hobbit he was. This is certainly true as Bilbo has gone through a rite and has fully matured.
