Bombur is one of the main characters of The Hobbit and Bofur's brother.

Character overview[]

Bombur a member of Thorin and Company. Along with his brother Bofur and their cousin Bifur, they are the only members of the company not belonging to Durin's Folk. Instead, they are appearantly Broadbeams from the Blue Mountains who joined Thorin's Halls.

Bombur is a a family man, with 14 sons and daughters. After the quest, the prosperity of Erebor resulted in him becoming so obese that six of his children had to haul him from the couch to the table.

During the Quest, Bombur's weight made him voulnrable to monsters intending to eat him. First, by Tom the Troll who picks him out of the others, and later by the Spiders, who deem him "fat and juicy". The latter is particularly alarming to Bombur, who fell asleep for much of the journey through Mirkwood (after falling into the Enchanted Stream) only to finally wake to find himself about to be eaten by a Spider.

Bombur operated the bellows that fuel the furnaces during The Battle of the Forges, using his gait to pull on the chain that moves them. In the Battle of the Five Armies, he blew the horn of Thorin Oakenshield. Later, he helped fend off an Orc who got stuck on the ax-shard in Bifur's foreheard, detaching the ax from his cousin's head in the process, which repaired his speech.
