Biography[]
At the end of the first Hobbit movie, the Thrush is flying over Thorin, Gandalf, Bilbo and Company. Óin sees the Thrush and mistakes it for a raven. It isn't until Gandalf says that it is actually a thrush. Thorin says the bird is a significant for a good omen, and Baggins can't agree more. The bird starts knocking on the side of the mountain where the dragon finally awakes (An Unexpected Journey)
While Balin teaches Bilbo of the woods that used to surround Erebor, a bird flies over them. The thrush is seen and Bilbo watches it with curiosity until Thorin interrupted him. As Bilbo stayed behind, waiting for the thrush, he hears a knocking. The Thrush knocks on the mountain side and the Moonlight shows the keyhole. (The Desolation of Smaug, DOS: Extended Edition)
Tolkien's legendarium[]
. The thrushes were messengers that the Laketown people understood. Bard could understand the language well enough to find Smaug's weak point on his body. He sleighs the dragon with his bow. The thrush knocks on Erebor, and the key is shown via the Sunlight. It also told Bard of the Dragon's weak point and brought back Roac the Raven to Thorin's company.
In The Hobbit, 1977 Bilbo sends the thrush to his bidding and tell Bard of the missing scale in Smaug's hide.
